I am a terrible blogger! I'm sorry for the lack of updates, I use every spare moment to paint and come up with new designs. In an effort to balance my life a bit better, I will be closing my shop for the month of June & July, taking a limited number of orders in Aug. My youngest will start full day kindergarten in the fall and the boys will be going into 2nd & 4th grade next year.

I have a ton of house projects to start as well.

Destiny

I hope one day, I can look back on these days and have this same attitude.
God is good, His goodness overflows even more as we suffer. His presence is felt in a way like never before. He sustains us and provides hope each day. I am so thankful to be in the grip of His grace.

Seven Thoughts on Suffering

As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

John 9:1-3

Man has historically been desperate to determine the why behind suffering. We want to analyze and categorize events into nice and neat designations of precise cause and effect. “This is happening because of _____” or “so that _______.” Perhaps we think that we can manipulate and control our future lives, protecting ourselves from certain undesired effects by avoiding particular causes.

This was the thinking behind the question of John 9. A man is blind (effect). It was naturally assumed that personal sin must have been the cause. But whose was it? His own? His parents? Grandparents? Kids?

Obviously someone did something wrong. Bad things don’t happen to “good” people.

Notice Christ’s response. The man was born blind so that God would be glorified. Can you feel the weight of that? Here was a man who had suffered for decades in order that at this particular moment Christ might display His mercy and magnify His grace.

Anyone familiar with the Old Testament should recognize this refrain. It is very similar to the problem that is dealt with in the book of Job. The Sabeans steal the oxen and the donkeys and strike down the servants. Fire falls from heaven and burns the sheep and the servants. Chaldeans raid, take the camels, and destroy the servants. Wind blows across the wilderness and topples the wall of the house in which his seven sons and three daughters were feasting. Loathsome sores break out on his body, his friends reject him, the young mock him, and his wife implores him to curse God. Surely Job was suffered.

His friends are convinced that they have insight into the situation. Certainly, they say, Job had sinned against God. Surely he was suffering the effects of his own transgression. His friends implored him to admit his sin, to repent, and be restored.

How does God deal with the answer regarding Job’s suffering? If you are not sure, I highly encourage you to go read Job 38-42. Rather than saying, “you see Job, this is exactly what I was doing in this,” God speaks of His sovereignty and power and wisdom and creativity. That does not exactly fit into our clean cause and effect categories. After reading the book we cannot point to a particular sin of Job and we cannot merely blame it on Satan. It is not that simple.

We will all suffer. This is the deserved lot of humanity in this age. We would thus do well to develop a theology of suffering before the dark night comes. You do not wait until you are choking to learn the Heimlich and neither should you wait until you are in the throes of tragedy before learning the reason behind, and the response to, suffering. I have included seven of my own thoughts that I find helpful as well as links to a few highly recommended resources.

Seven Thoughts on Suffering:

God is entirely sovereign over absolutely all suffering. He works “all things” according to the counsel of His will (Ephesians 1:11). Even if Satan’s hand is behind your suffering (as it was in Job’s case), God’s hand is still involved (notice that God recommends Job and places boundaries on Satan’s ability to inflict harm). It is not either/or. See Does God Ordain Evil? by Matt Chandler for more on God’s sovereignty over and use of evil to accomplish His good and holy desires.
All things exist for the glory of God and thus in some way God is glorified even in our suffering. Reread John 9 or the account of Lazarus in John 11 where Jesus intentionally delays His arrival so that Lazarus would die. Notice that the text says that this was motivated by His love and desire for His beloved to see God’s glory. It is better to suffer and see the glory of God than to continue in ignorant bliss.
All suffering is a result of sin’s origin with Adam’s first transgression. His sin has fractured all creation, but it will be restored one day (Romans 8:18-25). Therefore we can confidently say that tragedies are a result of sin, but as in John 9, we cannot look at the individuals afflicted and necessarily conclude that it was their direct sin, which precipitated the disaster (see Luke 13:1-5).
Suffering will work to conform us to the image of Christ (Romans 8:28-29). J.I. Packer—“Still He seeks the fellowship of His people and sends them both sorrows and joys to detach their love from other things and attach it to Himself.”
The proper response to suffering is faith and even joy. Rather than anxiousness, we should be growing in trust (I believe this will be the message this weekend at The Village). Rather than despair, we should be growing in joy (Romans 5:3-5). Trust that this is God’s good hand upon us and that He is a generous Father. All of His works toward His children are good. See this excellent and yet challenging article on Piper’s thoughts after he was diagnosed with cancer on how to not waste it.
All suffering is covered by the suffering of Christ. He was called one who was acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3) and He is able to help and sympathize with us in our suffering because of His own (Hebrews 2:5-18).
Soon and very soon there is coming a day free from suffering for those who have trusted and rejoiced in Christ. Believe this…hope in it…rest in it.

He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.

Moments

When I first started blogging I had intended it to be a means of communication for a number of reasons. My reasons have changed.
Over the past few months I've struggled with some health issues none of which I could ever imagined. I've been stopped in my tracks. Daily chores, running a house hold, and even painting have become difficult tasks. Most days require a fighting spirit and some days I just don't have much of one.
Amazingly God is still in control. He knows each day before I rise, he knows every breathe, every tear and joy He carries us through each struggle.
My husband and I are watching a series of videos (can't remember the name)
The speaker talks about these difficult times that life brings us basically warning us that these struggles will come and we need to be prepared and cling to the cross of Jesus.
Life isn't about us, it is simple about God. He gets the glory.

Are you prepared? Trouble is coming...maybe not today or even tomorrow, but someday.....do you have the faith?

Humbled

Tonight I humbly asked for prayer from the elders of our church. This has been a rough road over the last few months, I hope one day to share the details. As we called on God and cried out to Him I felt so humbled. I felt like a little child clinging to hope. After our time of prayer someone said you should feel "flattered" that God has chosen you to go through this experience. Honestly I never thought of it like that....."chosen". He knew I was going to experience this, He planned it perfectly, not to say that He wants us to suffer, but in suffering we are made stronger.
I love this verse.

Consider it pure joy my brothers when you face trials of many kinds,because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:2-4

Wow.....I'm still working on the "joy" part.

May you too, find a deep joy in all your trials.

Maybe someone is reading this today and they need to believe that God is still full of mercy and grace. Maybe, just maybe, you need to stop trusting yourself and put your faith and trust in the God who really loves you with an extravagant love. What is your soul craving? It is God who has made you and it is He who can fill you, and it is only Him who can fill you!! Come on home.

Jesus was not through with His servant Paul. There was a day that Paul was done, but today was not that day. God used Paul’s nephew to help Paul get out safely. Sometimes God uses angels and sometimes he uses our sister’s son who happened to be in the right place at the right time. If you are alive and I assume you are since you are reading this, then God is not finished with you either. Let God speak to your heart. Let God use you in your remaining time on this earth.

Down & Out

That's me, or at least the way I've been feeling! A couple of weeks ago I had fairly minor surgery, needless to say I've experience a bunch of complications along the way. Such fun! I now have developed a lovely infection so I still may be "out" for a couple more days, hopefully not weeks.

So if you're wondering when my shop will reopen, I can only hope to say soon!

Recently one of my customers contacted me to make a frame for a friend of hers. She was about to have baby #4. She proceeded to tell me the baby's daddy was serving along side her husband in Iraq. Kinda took my breath away as I thought about how difficult it must be to bring a new little one into the world with a husband/daddy so far away.
I decided to make two frames one for the new mom and another for my customer as she has a little daughter as well.

Here is the message I received this morning from this little girl's mom:

"We absolutely LOVE the frame. I put a picture of Maggie and her dad in it, and it sits on her nightstand. She kisses it before she goes to bed at night. It goes perfectly with her room. Thank you again for thinking of us!"

As I choked back the tears and thanked the Lord for allowing me to touch this little life, even in a very small way. These are the kind of emails that make me so grateful for the gift of painting. And, how fitting to receive this email on Memorial Day.

As I sit here recovering from surgery I've had some time to think. Why I schedule my surgery for the long weekend, I'll never know!
Being from Canada and moving to the United States 7 years ago I've had my eyes opened. One thing that struck me was the deep gratitude and appreciation that Americans have for those who have chosen to serve this country. The fact that ordinary citizens step up to the call of service is beyond comprehension to me. Thank you to those who have chosen to keep this country safe and have gone beyond the call of duty. God Bless America!

I Heart Coffee

Morning, noon and night, I love a great cup of java. I guess my addition started back in high school where it was love at first sight. I was hooked, as the passion grew I started working in a cute little coffee shop where I learned the tricks of the trade.
So why the talk about java? Well, I can't stand the thought of paying over $4.00 for a latte or a yummy mocha frappuccino, my fav! So I'm going to tell you how to make them at home for a dollar or less.
Here is the secret....go buy one of these! An espresso maker.
They really are an investment that will save a ton of dough.
I believe they retail for around sixty dollars, so do the math....
Let's say you stop at your favorite coffee shop 3x a week at $4-5 a cup, you've spent $12-15. You'll have your handy dandy espresso maker payed off in a month!
These are fabulous , cheap too!

To make a iced mocha or blended drink you can make them one of two ways.
Make a couple cups of espresso pour into a measuring cup, add 3-4 tablespoons of coco powder, add sugar couple of tablespoons depends on how sweet you like it. Mix very well until all ingredients dissolve. Pour into ice cube trays, like so...

When the urge hits, pop a couple cubes into a blender along with a cup or so of milk. Now you have a delicious blended coffee.
Did you know you can buy flavor syrups at Starbucks for around $5.00 a bottle? Crazy, the same price as one cup of coffee and they even have the sugar free available. One time I was in Starbucks and a lady behind me was in awe of my purchase. She said, what are you going to do with that bottle of syrup? Me: Gonna go home and make my own..... You could tell the wheels were turning in her head as she replied: I'm going to get a bottle too.
Well I'm off to get some work done as I drink one of these......

Spring Tea Party

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of decorating our church for a little tea party. My mom was here for a visit and lent her creative hand. Of course I forgot my camera and don't have any photos of the actual party but a couple of before shots.
These princess' were absolutely adorable in their beautiful gowns. They feasted on a variety of dainty treats; tea sandwiches, dip sparkly pretzel rods, yummy cookies We made the cookies from a fabulous s ugar cookie receipe, ordered the tiara cut out from ebay. We also made cute little tea pots and cups.
We made these cute little topiary trees that I found at Joanne Fabrics for $.98. Painted little flower pots added some glitter and my floral designer mom added the flowers and ribbon.
The tea pot was from goodwill for $1.99, dollar store flowers.

And when I came home I was surprised by yet another kid milestone....first lost tooth!

I finally made the bunny cake, I was determined after seeing a photo in a old Martha Stewart's magazine to tackle this cute little cake. Although it looks a bit less professional than the photo it was fun to make and fairly easy. The kids loved it, so as long as it passes their approval I'm happy too!

American Girl Sweetness

This was such a special memorable weekend for me! My parents are here for a visit from Canada. I planned a special little outing for the girls, we went down to Chicago for a memorable visit to the American girl cafe/store. The girls had some fun shopping and checking out the fantastic shops drooling over designer handbags and jewelry that I will never buy, even if I had the extra cash!!
The boys went to a crazy little sandwich shop featured on the food network while the girls dinned out a American girl for tea.

The cafe is decorated in fushia ,black & white zebra type prints.

Each little girl can dine with their very own doll decked out with a chair that attaches to the table. Along with their mini tea cup and saucer. ADORABLE

Frilly Ballerina Bed Skirt

I've been through the train, superhero, sports phrase....now onto the ballerina phase. My little princess in completely in love with anything related to this subject.
I found her bedding at PBK and decided I'd try my hand at coordinating a matching tutu bed skirt. I saw one online for an astronomical price and opted not to break the bank!

This project probably costs about 5.00 maybe a bit more or less once you determine the amount of fabric you need. I just guessed! I used 4 yards and 1 roll of ribbon, oh and some glue...yep no sewing for me.

Materials:
Fabric
Ribbon Satin
Glue sticks
Tulle double the amount of fabric
pick a lighter color or darker color to contrast with your fabric

Now, before I begin let me just say that I should have used a different color of tulle. My tulle blends in too much. I plan to pick up a contrast color to brighten things up a bit.
Grab your handy dandy glue gun and lets get started.

Here is the fabric & tulle that I used

All I did was measure the fabric and the length I wanted it to hang from top to bottom and cut. I hemmed my middles and glued them together. Add my tulle along the top with glue, it should flow down pass the bottom which will give a "puffy" look

Simply added ribbon along the bottom, the satin looks really pretty. Then its ready to go between the mattress and box spring. I played around with it to get the look I wanted, then pulled down the tulle.

I really wish they had a lighter green tulle, but this was all Wally world had. I'll try to find something lighter and take a photo. Either way at least it gets the job done and at least the metal bar is covered now!

What a story she tells, what a life she has had. A beautiful reminder of who is really in control of our lives. I can't help but reflect on my own life and the many blessings God has given me. I hope though if ever I face similar trials I will be able to respond as humbly as Heather.

Organizer For Ribbon

So you want to make your packages all pretty tied up in elegant ribbon, but you can't find the ribbon. When you finally dig deep into that box and find your pretty ribbon its all tangled and full of creases. I'm a wee bit obsessed with ribbon and have quite a stash so I came up with a quick cheap way to organize my rolls.(actually borrowed the idea from my mom who was a wedding designer and had a ton more than me) In the photo you'll see that I'm a bit lazy and often don't tape up my ends. My little organizer is set up in the basement so please ignore the lovely background!
Supplies Needed:
Dowels (usually less than a dollar)
Hangers I used the sticky type
Side your ribbon on the dowels and hang! Easy

Sorry for the neglect!
Well, tonight I hit my 200th sale in just a little over a year. I'm taking a bit of a break I'm totally exhausted. I have enjoyed every moment and have been blessed to have this creative outlet in my day.

Decorating for Christmas

My most favorite time of the year. I adore everything about the Christmas season.
The other day I was shopping at Kirkland's Home store. Hanging on their mirror was a beautiful wreath. A mirror provides an elegant, refractive backdrop for wreaths. Wrap metal wreath forms with floral tape to prevent them from scratching mirrors on which they're hung. The wreath was attached to the mirror with a suction cup, which I thought was an absolutely wonderful idea.
